| State of New Jersey Human Resource Development Institute
Scope of Work:
The New Jersey Human Resource Development
Institute, which is responsible for all training in the State of New Jersey, desired a
statewide supervisory training program that would accomplish three key goals: 1) equip
supervisors with the skill and knowledge needed to transition into a management position;
2) provide hands-on development experiences in key management skill areas; and 3) provide
this development as a foundation for all New Jersey managers. They conducted a
comprehensive needs assessment and determined the program should address issues specific
to state government, and be five days in length, delivered in five modules, one per week.
This format enabled application between sessions.
Sterling Institute was privileged to be selected to
design a custom curriculum to address the identified needs. As an overview, Day One
focuses on the supervisor's role, the changing environment and communication as a
management function. It includes an assessment instrument developed specifically to
address the needs and competencies identified for New Jersey managers and supervisors, and
designed to provide input from the participant's manager. Day Two concentrates on
motivating and developing employees. Day Three addresses performance management issues and
handling performance appraisal meetings. In Day Four participants discover how their
decision-making practices can serve to build employee commitment and develop leadership.
Day Five explores how to maintain commitment in a changing environment, and provides tips
for planning, organizing and prioritizing.
This program, Supervising in A Changing
Environment, is being delivered by ten New Jersey facilitators who were certified by
Sterling Institute.
Accomplishments:
The pilots have been well received and the New
Jersey Human Resource Development Institute is gearing up for between ten and eighteen
offerings in the coming academic year. |
