Essentials of Leadership

Summary
This three-day program for managers is designed to teach leadership foundation skills to improve participants' abilities to lead others, achieve business results and develop commitment to key organizational priorities and values. Participants learn essential elements of effective leaders so they can create a shared sense of purpose in employees; align people to organizational goals; encourage them to take responsible risks and adopt new ways to achieve results. As a result of this program, participants are better able to achieve business results; form relationships built on trust and respect and empower employees to become proactive.

The traditional role of managers and leaders is rapidly changing. Today’s organization requires leaders to think creatively and systemically, integrating ideas and resources to better meet customer needs with limited resources. More than ever, there’s a need for people to seize the opportunities that are presented and lead their organizations to greatness. Books are filled with leadership information and guidelines, but the challenge is to turn essential leadership practices into something that is practical and useful. Leadership is not the private reserve of a few men and women. It’s a process ordinary people use when they’re bringing forth the best from themselves and others. The fundamental purpose of this workshop is to assist people, managers and individual contributors alike, in furthering their abilities to lead others to get extraordinary things done.

Course Outcomes
This program will explore different approaches to building leadership effectiveness. Participants will have an opportunity to increase their personal capacity as leaders through exercises and self-refection as they examine topics such as leadership competencies, strategic planning and creating alignment. Participants will learn more about themselves, leadership challenges others face and their leadership roles. Specifically, the program is designed to enable participants to:

  • Identify the differences between leadership and management practices;
  • Learn strategies and methods to increase alignment and enrollment;
  • Analyze the significant ways in which the organization's environment and operating practices can facilitate, or inhibit, achievement of the desired future state;
  • Assess the impact that their practices are having on the organization's performance and progress toward the desired future state;
  • Learn effective decision making strategies with their employees to build commitment and increase participation toward organizational goals; and
  • Plan the steps they can take to increase their effectiveness in leading and managing the organization.

This seminar utilizes Sterling Institute’s Leadership Practices Survey and a self-assessment questionnaire to give participants focused feedback on their leadership practices as perceived by those who report to them. This instrument will help differentiate between the participant’s individual strengths and those improvement opportunities where alternative styles or practices might create better results.

Why should you consider this program?

Because even the strongest managers cannot “push” organizations through change. Instead, leaders must “pull” them through change processes with one hand while holding tight with the other to the organization’s business priorities and values. This seminar strengthens the skills of both hands.
