Dynamics of Leadership

Summary
This three-day program improves participants' abilities to set the mission, vision and values for their organization and then to enroll people in and build their commitment to key organizational priorities. Participants learn how to create a shared sense of purpose; align people to organizational goals; encourage them to take responsible risks and adopt new ways to achieve results. As a result of this program, participants are better able to form relationships built on trust and respect and empower people to become proactive.

In periods of relatively predictable, incremental change, organizations rely on effective managers to control processes and productivity. But when change increases in its scope and impact, making the work environment unpredictable and chaotic, the most effective employees and managers can get lost in the whitewater. Leadership skills are needed to guide the organization through change, deepening commitment to key organizational priorities and values. What we need then is no longer the manager, but the managerial leader.

Course Outcomes
In addition to a clear assessment of their current leadership skill set, including both strengths and improvement opportunities, participants leave this seminar with heightened awareness and the increased leadership skills needed to:

  • Focus more squarely on their work unit's purpose and values in order to raise their colleagues' enthusiasm and motivation for achieving outstanding results;
  • Lead others through major internal and external changes that will impact on the organization's vision and key goals;
  • Open up work unit communications to create stronger trust and mutual support;
  • Align people, work unit resources, and operating practices in order to maximize work performance and results;
  • Balance the often conflicting demands of achieving day-to-day results while taking the actions needed to realize the organization's future vision; and
  • Play an increasing role as a leader in a changing world.

This seminar utilizes Sterling Institute's Leadership Practices Survey and a self-assessment questionnaire to give participants focused feedback on their leadership practices as perceived by those who report to them. This instrument will help differentiate between the participant's individual strengths and those improvement opportunities where alternative styles or practices might create better results.

Why should you consider this program?

Because even the strongest managers cannot "push" organizations through change.  Instead, leaders must "pull" them through change processes with one hand while holding tight with the other to the organization's business priorities and values.  This seminar strengthens the skills of both hands.
