Expanding The Value Of Diagnostic Instruments

The Gift To See Ourselves As Others See Us

The real value of focused feedback is the opportunity to see ourselves as other see us. Candid feedback on performance is an invaluable tool, because while it can validate our own self-perceptions, it also forces us to face reality when we hold assumptions about our management, peer, leadership or team practices that are not supported by the people with whom we work. Survey feedback from our direct reports, peers, or team members communicates to us in no uncertain terms our practices have an impact on other people. It lets us know whether other people think that our practices are contributing to or hindering our performance and relationship with them. There is no running away from the power of this message. Focused feedback enables us to test our perceptions of our strengths and weaknesses. A review of the data assists us to confirm our self-perceptions, recognize previously unseen strengths and become aware of previously unidentified improvement opportunities. Focused feedback from others helps us determine whether our views of our work practices are realistic or whether they are having unintended consequences. An analysis of our survey results will also help us prioritize our improvement needs in light of what our survey respondents consider to be our greatest needs.
